Joseph, I'm no Hemingway, but I have learned first-hand about the value of not accepting "good enough." I thought I had the right beginning for one of my novels, but when the editor and line editor both thought it could be improved, I struggled with it some more (after I got through pouting), and sure enough, what they suggested turned out to be just right.
I suppose this actually illustrates two truths about writing: stay with it until it's right, and don't be too proud to take advice from others who are knowledgeable in the field.

Richard, I know from reading some of your fiction that you have a commitment to excellence that Hemingway would appreciate. I wish more classic novels would be published in editions that show the endings or other material that was not quite good enough to make the final cut. I think it would give people a more realistic idea about the writing process.
